ABSTRACT
This paper presents a flexible computational method to simulate architectural design elements out of non-standard and irregular sets of material stocks. This approach contributes to ongoing efforts to reduce material processing in common reuse strategies by developing a framework for human-machine design collaborations. Our three-dimensional packing method accepts as inputs user preferences with the goal of creating a framework for design that integrates creative decision-making, enabling architects to simulate and conceptualize alternative design schemes for material reuse. As part of this research, we propose the simulation of sets of parametrically derived objects of irregular geometry and size in the form of digitally generated stones, children's toys, fragmented bricks, and cracker crumbs as proxies for post-demolition building materials. Through a series of case studies, we demonstrate the potential of a heuristic combinatorial algorithm to respond to design preferences.
